Die Berliner Mauer

Been lurking around people's blogs, and my investigation so far leads me to the conclusion that no man is happy. Yet, they all look so merry. Yes, so joyful and animated, jolly good.

The other day at work they talked about one of the students losing control over himself and yelling something incoherent with a desperate and suicidal air. Funny how sunny he looked normally. But, after a second thought, it's not all that strange. When you make a mistake and try hard to pretend that nothing has happened, it just gets all the more obvious. No matter how good one is at pretending, you can always catch him off guard, provided that you know how to look. Provided that you know how to look at yourself.

Frustrating it is when someone tries to escape from this hell and his every attempts been met with doors shut tight, doors of false images, concived by himself and those around him.

In order to breach the wall, one must not harbour clouded vision for it only lures and misguides. Fear is another major benefactor in the construction and maintenance of this abyss, like a well-trained watchdog, it keeps one at bay. It sinks its teeth into you and leaves you bleeding to death should you tumble upon its territory. And if one fails in the task of breaking free, then the downfall is destined, it's just a matter of time and the way it is brought about.

Every man is happy, until he thinks about it.

Quite true Kevin. Sometimes I still wonder which one is better, be happy or be not.

Hahn, nah, this entry was posted 12 hours prior to the conversation.

"Sometimes I still wonder which one is better, be happy or be not."

Great question, Schuma! I certainly have an opinion (I've got one on everything, and almost 25% of them are correct!). The answer is: it depends on your goals. If you want to produce 'art' (a loose interpretation of the word, including painting, writing, philosophy, sociology, and similar stuff), then you absolutely must not be happy. You cannot produce in these fields unless you are severly depressed or at least carrying some great angst (that is making you depressed). Sadness forces you to grow, which is key to these fields.

If you choose to lead a life of science or choose a life of just passing time, the answer is the same, "Be happy". Happiness makes you more productive, and producing new things will make your happiness increase yet again, via pride.

On the grandest scale of all, it doesn't matter a bit, so enjoy life (i.e. be happy!). You are going to die. Sooner or later, no matter what you do, you will be forgotten. Even though we remember people from as far back as Egypt in 3,000 BC, in a scant few billion years the sun will eat us when it becomes a red giant. So that memory will be forgotten.

So I'm for being happy. It's not always easy, but it's a worthy goal. If enjoying our lives is not our duty, it should be.

"Come dance with the west wind
And touch all the mountain tops.
Sail o're the canyons
And up to the stars.
And reach for the heavens
And hope for the future,
And all that we can be
And now what we are."

Not sure what it means, since I'm a science guy. Might be important though.

Think that's what man is after, being happy, no matter what his means are, let it be figuring out the meaning of life or appreciating the mother nature, at attempting to acquire it.
